Getting to know Some Sprouts

The short walk to ‘The Finsbury’ from Manor House station was gnarled by heavy rain and muddy roads- but after talking to Some Sprouts and seeing them perform their very intimate concert, I must say that anyone who is into great alternative/indie pop should drop what they're doing and look them up.

‘Someone You Love’ and ‘Separate Waves’ make you groove while also questioning if you are loving whomever you love rightfully- You'll feel connected to these two songs either because of its spirited/funky tempo or its surprisingly sentimental and relatable lyrics.

Some Sprouts have a great whimsical sound; each song that they put forward is filled with emotion and thought-provoking lyrics that allow you to emerge yourself in their art .

When questioned about how it all started, their favourite songs, and what the process behind creating/producing for their ‘Immt – EP’ album was; this is what the band members Joshua, Miguel and Jakob had to say:

Jakob: “Some of us met in school and we just started making music after finishing school, but it only became serious after finding our bass player Alex, and drummer Miguel- before that all we did was jam in my parent’s basement.”

Joshua: “We record all of our songs in Germany. We even spent 14 days in an empty house that belonged to Jakob’s parents… in the middle of nowhere. We lived there and recorded there, it was fun"

Miguel: “For me the first album ‘Florescer’ is also very important- it’s actually a Portuguese word, and I’m Portuguese; I was first linked to the band after listening to their demo of ‘Clowns’. It was the song that made me want to join them, the song that started it all. it holds a special place."

Every single one of them talked about getting together and the process of recording their music with massive smiles on their faces; smiles so big that everyone in that small patio table started to smile alongside them.

They are extremely lively and charismatic individuals. And that’s apparent not only by the way they perform and engage their audience, but also by the way they carry themselves. They look like stars.

The concert was starting in a few minutes, so we ended our talk with the band by asking them about their musical influences, and three words that would describe how it feels to perform live:

Joshua: “I would say Mac Demarco and Tame Impala are artists that we listen to a lot together, but I don’t necessarily think we have similar music – I wouldn’t compare them to us. They are legends to us.”

Joshua: “For me when I perform, what I feel is a development of emotions. nervous, excited, happiness

Miguel: friozinho na barriga is a Portuguese phrase that describes that warm feeling you get in your belly, and those are my three words.”

Jakob: “My feeling is just about music in general. Maybe Communication without words

Their latest hit is ‘Someone you love’, and the music video has just been released. It's a beautifully sinister piece- the storyline focuses on a 'mad scientist' making wax figures of all five members, and then bringing them to life.

This song was originated when Joshua wrote the chorus as self-advice; He was trying to talk himself out of getting too attached to someone too fast, in fear of getting hurt. shortly after that, he got together with Jakob and wrote the rest of the song.

The the band addressed London as a “very special place”, and the concerts they had as experiments that worked out really well.

Joshua: “We have been to England before to visit friends. It’s crazy that there is so many great under covered musicians, and we get to come over here as a German band- It’s a great environment and English people are very open to our music.”

Some Sprouts are on most social media platforms, and their music can be streamed on places such as Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube.

If you haven’t heard of them, definitely give them a listen; and If you have and have sadly missed their previous concerts here in London this October, don’t worry!
